Uncommon Adventures

Learn. Explore. Outdoors.

What we do

At Uncommon Adventures, we believe the best place to learn is outdoors. We host fun and dynamic Map and Compass Classes across a number of locations in the greater Seattle area. Our experienced instructors provide participants with the opportunity to develop skills they can apply in every-day life.

What a typical class looks like:

  • An introduction to reading maps (along with terrain association, and techniques to navigate and route - without a compass)

  • Instruction on how to use a compass and how to adjust for declination, shoot and follow a bearing.

  • A detailed overview on how to take bearings and trip planning and navigating to a destination on the map.

  • Practice sessions on how to triangulate and find a position on the map.

  • Question and answer session

Participants will have the opportunity to practice their skills and become increasingly proficient in understanding surroundings, pinpointing location, and navigating to a destination. All participants will receive a handout.

Our map and compass classes are suitable for those with and without experience and are limited to those aged 12+.

Where we teach

The Ballard Locks

Enhance your map and compass skills at one of Seattle’s favorite places for residents and visitors alike. The Ballard Locks boasts botanical gardens, a salmon ladder, and great boat watching. Conveniently located just north of downtown Seattle and right next to Seattle’s bustling Ballard neighborhood, this location offers a more urban experience than our State Park class options.

Lake Sammamish State Park

Gain map and compass experience at Lake Sammamish’s scenic 531-acre park. With millions of visitors every year, Lake Sammamish is the 6th largest lake in Washington, and is home to a variety of wildlife.

Saint Edwards State Park (Coming Soon!)

Learn new navigation skills across the sprawling lawns and lush forested trails of Saint Edward State Park. This 326-acre park hugs the eastern shore of Lake Washington (the second largest natural lake in the state) and is surrounded by low forest.
